Serum Calcium Levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study in Kodagu District, Karnataka

Abstract

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (TDM) is a chronic metabolic disorder marked by hyperglycemia. Calcium plays a crucial role in insulin secretion and glucose metabolism, yet the relationship between serum calcium levels and diabetes mellitus remains unclear, warranting further exploration. Objective: This study aims to assess and compare serum calcium levels in T2DM patients and healthy controls in the Kodagu district, hypothesizing significant differences that could influence clinical management and public health. Methods: Conducted from December 2022 to March 2025 at the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences, this hospital-based, cross-sectional study included 200 participants-100 with T2DM and 100 age-matched controls. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for serum calcium levels, fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Results: Patients with T2DM had a mean serum calcium level of 8.45 ± 0.75 mg/dL, significantly lower than the 9.25 ± 0.73 mg/dL observed in controls (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Decreased calcium levels in T2DM patients suggest impaired calcium homeostasis, emphasizing the need for monitoring and potential supplementation to improve glucose management strategies. Further research is needed to understand these associations better.
